YAKISUGI HOUSE

Whistler, BC
Completion: 2017

This contemporary Japanese inspired renovation of a classic Whistler mountain home focused on the addition of a dormer to the second level and opening up the main living area. CFI proposed removal of structural wood posts to allow for adequate furniture placement in the open concept living space. The design incorporates dark industrial metal & concrete elements along with black charred wood paneling and balances those materials with warm white oak in order to retain the cozy mountain feel.Black cabinets, range and hood fan are contrasted against rustic oak millwork creating a striking modern kitchen.Standout features include the concrete and steel fireplace feature, the custom staircase with exposed steel stringers and the steel window frame detailing. The concrete, metal and millwork were all manufactured locally in the Sea to Sky corridor. Japanese design elements were highly influential in the concept development of this project and are reflected in the zen-like atmosphere this house reflects.
